Your patchwork can be enhanced and accented, becoming a new creation. Mary Fons and her guest Jerry Granada discuss the tools at your disposal—from sewing machine needles, to threads—and share techniques for generating a secondary layer of art to add exciting new dimensions to your patchwork!

Featured Technique: Quilting Embellishments

Jerry Granata is a retired US Navy musician living in Palm Springs, California who raised the anchor and sailed away on a thrilling journey through the world of quilting. As a 5-year old child growing up in Palos Heights, Illinois, Jerry would sit next to his sister as she worked at her sewing machine, drawn by the sound of the machine and the enticing fabrics she’d use. “When she asked if I would like to try, I jumped at the opportunity and I’ve been sewing ever since,” he recalled.

  1. A related question regarding embellishments and guests…. I believe I watched an episode with a guest who used a simple line drawing as a guide, then overlaid it with several colors of sheer fabrics using featherweight fusible and parchment paper. Is that correct? Is there a way to view that episode again, as I don’t see it listed and couldn’t remember which show. Thank you!!

  2. I just watched show 2810 with Jerry Granada and it doesn’t match what you describe here. The show showed how to use nontraditional fabrics in quilting. That matches the title of your 2803 but the description of that show talks about Marianne’s version of the quilt. How can I find the show which shows the nontraditional fabrics used in this Quilt of Valor?

    1. Hello — I’m not sure what happened here, but it sounds like perhaps there was a mix up in the titles offered by your cable provider? Episode 2810 is about machine embellishments and 2803 is about quilting with alternative fabrics. 2803 also displays Valiant Eagle, a Quilt of Valor® designed by Marianne Fons. In this episode, Jerry Granada shows how to use nontraditional fabrics for any quilt, including Marianne’s Valiant Eagle. However, the Valiant Eagle quilt pattern offers material guidelines for traditional fabrics. You’ll want to take what you learned from episode 2803 and apply it to Marianne’s quilt.
