“I wanted to share what I did with your cat pattern from the Jan/Feb 2003 issue. The black and white kitty with the red feather in his mouth is called ‘What bird’. (Note the clever cat background fabric that Mary used).

  

I modified the cat pattern and made another quilt showing him pulling flowers from a vase. The fabric of the flower in his mouth is actually a piece cut from a dress my mother made me when I was about three years old. I am now 81. I was able to use the fabric several times throughout the quilt. I fused another fabric to the back of each piece, just in case the old fabric decided to disintegrate – it was probably from an old Montgomery Ward catalog. I used to call it my apple dress. This quilt was made for my daughter living in Missoula Montana – I named it ‘Diane’s Flower Garden’. Some of the designs on the quilt are from patterns, some free-hand appliqué, and others are patterns from my stained glass books – my hobby before I started quilting ten years ago. The large blue vase was made by sewing a light weight fabric to right side then slit and turned to wrong side, it’s very soft when done that way. The cat’s body was done with very narrow webbing just to the outside. I machine quilted it in three sections, it’s easier to handle that way.”
