25' x 10', 2007.Living near the Maine coast affords Kathy Angel Lee, a retired educator, great opportunities to capture nature in photographs and watercolors. These images often reappear in her pictorial quilts, such as this one featuring a river in a marshy area. Kathy used a mix of hand-dyed and commercial fabric, with a flip-and-sew method for the sky, and collage for the marsh and river. The entire top is machine appliquéd, and has extensive thread painting with rayon thread for shading and movement of the grasses. The quilt is further embellished with narrow silk ribbon on the fence, and thread lace and tulle in the tree. Kathy enjoys teaching at local shops and spending time with her grandchildren.
