66' x 55', 2007Colorado artist Denise Labadie has been quilting for thirty years. In 1993, an art quilt class taught by Michael James directed her creativity in new directions. Four years later, Denise’s husband gave her a trip to Ireland, the land of her ancestors, with the stipulation that she come back with a quilt idea. While in Ireland, Denise was drawn to the Bronze Age Piper Stones in County Wicklow, where the townspeople told her the stones were talking to her. This quilt is one of twenty in Denise’s series of original Irish Stone Quilts. She enlarged a photo of the site for reference, and then hand-painted each individual stone, which was appliquéd and then strip pieced to form the top. Denise teaches, exhibits her quilts nationally and internationally, and makes commissioned quilts of sacred locations.Designer: Denise Labadie
