36' x 24', 2007Katherine Lawrence made this quilted landscape, which depicts the Sangre de Cristo mountains near her home in Los Alamos, New Mexico, for a very special reason. In the spring of 2006, her oldest son, David, donated a kidney to her, and she created this quilt to thank him. The family often hiked in the region, so the quilt has become a treasured memento for David. Katherine assembled cotton and batik fabrics with raw edge fused appliqué and satin-stitched edges. She then embellished the top with surface painting and thread work. A lifelong sewer, Katherine has been quilting for more than a decade, and loves to explore all kinds of construction and decorative techniques.Designer: Katherine Lawrence tallpines@earthlink.net
