31 x 39, 2002Working from a photograph of her two daughters looking at constellations in the night sky, Maria Elkins crafted this beautiful, personal quilt with a combination of hand painting and piecing. The title Evening Star was chosen for the pieced quilt blocks that form the quilt wrapped around her daughters. For the figures, Maria used Tsukineko inks on cotton, fused appliqu, and free-motion quilting. She embellished the sky with twinkling rhinestones. Maria learned how to sew as a child and has been quilting since 1985.Designer: Marian Elkins
