52' x 40', 2005Debra Danko started quilting 17 years ago after previous careers as a radio broadcaster and a rodeo competitor. Past experiences have given her the courage and persistence to complete things beyond the ordinary. Her lush petunia quilt certainly falls into the supernatural category. Debra photographed the flower and then sketched it on paper to determine the composition of the finished quilt. She takes a realistic approach to her oversized images and enjoys capturing the quirkiness and individuality of each petal. Debra hand painted batik and commercial cotton fabric, and constructed the flower form with fusible and machine appliqué, embellished with machine embroidery. Debra Danko's award-winning quilts have been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. She is also a member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Surface Design Association.
