Each year since 1996, the Coastal Quilt Artists from Massachusetts have made a composite landscape quilt based on a series of photos of a local place or landmark. Previous subjects include Fenway Park and Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. Arena Farms won first place in the group category at Houston's 2008 International Quilt Festival. Each quilter took a section and interpreted her panel with a mixture of machine-quilted and hand-appliquéd surface design techniques. The farm, located a few miles from Walden Pond, came to life with fabric painting, photo transfers, silk screening, embroidery, beading, and netting. The artists, Lynne Conover, Betty Cromwell, Janet Duncan Dignan, Janet Dye, Sandy Gregg, Penny Myles, Graciela Piccolo, Joan Randall, Pat Smith, and Bobbie Sullivan, meet twice a month in their hometown of Scituate to quilt and compare notes on their collaborative creations.
