“Quilty,” an Online Show for Rookie Quilters, Hosted by PBS Newcomer Mary Fons, To Launch January 19th

Winterset, IA – January 17, 2011 – Though it may come as a surprise to those who think quilts are something collecting dust in their attic, quilting is a 3.58 billion dollar industry (Quilting in America Survey, 2010) which continues to enjoy steady growth year after year. What the numbers don’t show, however, is the need for the next generation of quilters to pick up their needle and thread.

Enter “Quilty,” a new online show offered at QNNtv.com by parent company New Track Media. (www.heyquilty.com) “Quilty” seeks to inform and inspire the next generation of quilters by getting the new crowd where they are (online, of course) and giving them what they want—friendly, casual instruction with a sense of humor.

Hosting the show is self-proclaimed “junior varsity” quilter Mary Fons, daughter of celebrity quilt educator/author Marianne Fons, and new co-host of PBS’s nationally-aired hit quilting show “Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.” Mary previously appeared as a guest on “Love of Quilting,” and quilters responded that seeing a fresh face was a plus for the show—and for the industry at large. When Liz Porter retired in 2010, Mary joined her mother as co-host, offering a “newbie” quilter’s perspective alongside her expert quilter mom.

Mary felt there was an unmet need for a show that would reach the truly green quilters of her generation. “I have lots of friends who want to make a baby quilt or a quilt for charity,” Mary says, “and I know that the first thing they do is Google ‘baby quilt’ or search YouTube.” The options she found when she did her own search were less than perfect. “There wasn’t a truly youthful, approachable show that was teaching quilting,” she says. “I wanted to give beginners something that feels like there’s a friend right thee next to them, showing them how to make a quilt.”

Because many new quilters have hardly even seen a sewing machine, much less threaded one, “Quilty” will focus on the fundamentals of quilting. “There are no dumb questions,” Fons says.

“Quilty,” which is filmed in Chicago and launches on QNNtv.com on January 19th, promises to deliver great quilting instruction with humor, zest, and respect for the art of quilting.

“Quilty” is sponsored by: APQS, Baby Lock, Havels Sewing, and Quiltology.
