I recently completed the quilt ‘Asian Harmony’ that was featured in the March/April 2007 issue of Love of Quilting. I had come across the pattern while on a guild retreat in Ocala, Florida and knew that someday I would make that quilt. After all, I’d lived in Japan and fallen in love with all the Asian fabrics.
My love of quilting began in 2006, after a 26-year career in the U.S. Navy. I’d always wanted to quilt, but just never had the time. In retirement, I made the time. My second passion is traveling, so when the opportunity came along, I offered to accompany my mother-in-law on a trip to Sasebo, Japan to visit her second son that was also in the Navy and stationed there.
With the pattern for Asian Harmony tucked in my suitcase, Marge and I set off for Japan in August 2007. While on a local shopping trip, I came across the perfect navy and gold fabrics for the quilt. Several weeks ago, while living in Japan again, I finally completed the quilt.
My husband, Stephen, and I currently live in Okinawa, Japan with our cat, Miss Torii.
