Quilting buddy

Stitching-in-the-ditch can be very tedious, especially on small patch quilts. So, I have a great tip – get a Sewing Buddy to help you with this task. My sewing buddy is my 6-year-old Toy Fox Terrier, Hunter. He just loves to help while I quilt. And, we love your show.

Many flips, few flops

After seeing the Flip-Flop quit in your May/June 2008 issue of Love of Quilting, I couldn't wait to make my own.

It was a labor of love for my granddaughter Emma. She had a hand in choosing the fabrics and followed Grandma's slow process with much patience. We varied the design, matched the background fabric with the color of her room, and added my innovative reversible clamshell border.

It's done now and she enjoys displaying it for all her young friends. Eleven is such a special age.

Thanks to Fons & Porter for all the years of quilting expertise. The first book I bought when I wanted to quilt and had no clue how, was 'Quilter's Complete Guide.' I've used it as a reference for practically every quilt I made in the past 11 years and I thank you.

Midnight Sun
submitted by LaTanya Broady, Homewood, IL.

Six years ago my mother persuaded me to take a quilting class with her. Reluctantly I agreed, but cautioned her that sewing was not for me. I feared it would interfere with my passion for gardening. My mother died two years later in 2005. Little did I know that the Love of Quilting would help me deal with my grief and carry on her passion for giving. I have made over a dozen quilts for family, friends, and charitable organizations over the last six years. On each quilt is attached a label that reads "In Loving memory of Shirley A. Broady" followed by my initials and the date it was made.

When I saw the Midnight Sun quilt in the Nov/Dec 2008 issue of Love of Quilting, I knew I had to make it. The colors were so bold. I could not decide who I could make if for though. I showed the magazine to a friend at work and she begged me to make it for her and I did. Instead of making a second quilt with the leftover triangles, I used them on the other side and made her a reversible quilt. I made two centers and doubled the borders to make a queen size quilt.

Family Circle

Three years ago I started on a mission of making quilts for each of our five children, ten grandchildren and a new great-granddaughter. That totaled 16 quilts! About halfway through the list, one of my grandsons (21 years old at that time), said he wanted his quilt made from leftover fabric from his parents', brother's, and sister's quilts. He started me thinking. When I got through the whole list, I had fabric left from every quilt. The last one (#17) would be mine and I could use the fabric from each one. When I saw the 'Circle of Life' pattern in your magazine, I knew that was it. I customized it to fit my needs. It is 101" by 106". Each block is 12 ½" and represents a family member, made from their quilt fabric with their name embroidered on the corner. I added a button in the center of each circle. The four corners are blank for any new additions to the family. The drop is 15" with a hand-appliquéd vine. The rest is all machine done. I call it our 'Family Circle'.

Thanks for a great magazine with great patterns. I don't get much done on the day it arrives in the mail! I also enjoy your TV show. I record them all so I don't miss any of them.

Happy Quilting!
