Clever is as clever does…
Isn't it amazing how often it takes a non-quilter to come up with the perfect quilting advice, tip, or tool? In fact, for an experienced quilter, it can be shocking to even think that someone would consider 'tweaking' those time-worn techniques passed down from generation to generation.
And struggling with yards of binding? Who would perceive this as a struggle? This is just the way it's done. I'm not interested in some new fangled technique…or some new crazy theory…or tool…or…hey, what is that thing? How did you do that? Well, maybe I might just try it, just this once…or twice.
Sally Caboth of Alta, Iowa shares how her son made her life a little easier.
“I wanted to show you a picture of a solid walnut tool my son, Dave, recently made for me after he saw me wresting with a very long strip of binding. I've got to say, this new tool works very well! I'm guessing it is probably a one-of-a-kind so I just call mine the 'Winder Binder'. Hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoy using it.” - Sally
Or, for another fun example, check out Paul Boyum's ad on page 104 of the July/August 2009 issue of Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. One evening Paul was watching his wife quilt and struggle with those large, flimsy thread spools and decided he might be able to do something about it. Not only are Paul's unique creations artistic and fun to look at, they provide a heavy and very stable spool base—no more fussing. Nice job Paul!

Hobby keeps war veteran busy
submitted by Roger Stillpass, Florissant, MO.
Roger Stillpass, 75-years-old, is a Purple Heart recipient from World War II, and now spends his free time quilting. “Quilting gives me a lot of peace and solitude,” Stillpass was quoted in the North County Journal. “It keeps my mind occupied.” He also said, “When I first retired, it was so hard to wake up in the morning and have nothing to do. I tried playing golf, but I was terrible.”
Roger will display over 60 wall hangings and quilts at the St. Peters Community & Arts Center from June 5 - July 7. He is a member of both the Calico Needlers and Loose Threads Guilds, and his quilts have been featured throughout the Midwest and in Florida. According to Roger, his beautiful quilts are not for sale, they are either meant specifically for a family member, or are donated to non-profit organizations to use as fundraisers.
The public is invited to stop by the Center between June 5–July 7 to view this spectacular exhibit. St. Peters Community & Arts Center is located at 1035 St. Peters-Howell Road in St. Peters, MO.

“My son and his family were fortunate to host a foreign exchange student from Germany for the last school year. So that she could remember her stay here, I made a lap sized quilt for her. The school "mascot" is a cardinal. From other projects that I do, I had scraps of fabric with a cardinal on it. These pieces were cut into 2-1/2" squares. I made them into 9 patch squares, and the alternate squares were solid. Borders were then put on it, and it was tied. The label that I appliqued on the back read " Made with love for Ella Marie Bohm, so she will remember her 2008-2009 school year at Thorp High School, Wisconsin, USA by "Grandma" Regina Syryczuk." Everyone that saw this quilt loved it. Her mother and godmother came here for a few days to visit her host family, and were here for Ella's going away party. It was hard to imagine all the people that came to the party. Ella was a very well liked person that was a cheerleader, played softball, basketball, and was on the prom court. It was hard to see her go back to Germany, but she said she'll be back to visit again next year.”
