Remember to schedule time for yourself—everyone will thank you!
Quilting is a gift that keeps on giving. You as the quilter benefit personally— since quilting is one of those great mind, body and soul experiences; your family benefits because when you’re happy, they’re happy; and since a quilt is usually a special gift for a special someone, a happy recipient in the end will benefit. So there you go, if you are a quilter, one way to remain guilt-free is to take plenty of time for yourself, and quilt!

Throughout each issue of Fons & Porter Love of Quilting and Easy Quilts, Marianne and Liz try to offer a wide variety of helpful ‘Sew Smart’ tips and ideas. Example, for the ‘Dream Catcher’ quilt in the fall issue of Easy Quilts, page 11, Marianne suggests chain piecing to keep all  of those colorful rows in order. However, if you need further instruction on chain piecing, you can always go to your dashboard and select ‘Videos On Demand’, and for your keyword, type ‘chain piecing’.

Travel weary but still smiling

It’s always fun visiting with the enthusiastic travelers that arrive in Winterset, Iowa, to shop at our store. Apparently undaunted by high gas prices, these devoted quilters continue to come from all over the world, driving everything from RVs to compacts. Every once in awhile, one of these visitors stands out just a little more than the others. Take for example . . . Biker-Dude.

Two years ago, John "Butch" Myers, Jr. of Chesapeake City, Maryland., was forced to admit that it was time to quit smoking. It took three heart attacks, four angioplasties, two stents and a team of doctors before he was convinced, but John finally threw away the cigarettes. To keep his hands busy, he said he started pestering his wife to show him how to make quilts. “She seemed to really enjoy quilting and I was desperate for anything to keep my mind off smoking,” he said. And now, almost two years later and 38 completed quilts under his belt, John decided to make his way to Fons & Porter’s shop to thank Marianne for the much-appreciated words of encouragement. “I wrote Marianne a thank-you note explaining how I never would have quit smoking if it wasn’t for her and Liz. I told her how much I enjoyed watching the Fons & Porter show and reading their magazine. I never expected an answer, but Marianne wrote back right away with lots of great advice. I guess that was all the encouragement I needed, I’m smoke free now, and the doc even Ok’d me to get back on my bike and take this two-week road-trip.”

John has always been an avid biker and noted that he has traveled to all four of the furthermost corners of the United States. Currently, his road trips follow a slightly different route. “I visit quilt stores all along the way now,” he said. “From here, I’m heading to Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and then Nevada. I’ll visit every quilt shop I can I love it and, it gives me a chance to show off some the my patterns I’ve started to design,” he said with a big smile, “but, I’ve got to admit that sometimes when I ride up to one of those little quilt shops on my Harley, dressed in full leather, I get some pretty strange looks.”

If you would like to contact John regarding his quilting pattern designs, you may email him at:
