From a reader and devoted quilter,
Hanky Art submitted by Roberta Caltrider, Adair, Iowa
“My daughter gave me all of her Mother-in-Law’s hankies and asked if I could find a way to incorporate them into an heirloom quilt. I actually ended up making two separate wall hangings.
The white quilt was inspired by the fun little tradition that was so popular in the 1940s and 50s. You use the left side of a man’s shirt with both the pocket and placket left intact. The handkerchiefs are then placed in the pockets, just as the waitresses wore them in those days.
The other butterfly wall hanging is made entirely of hankies, except for the inner borders, backing, and binding. I had enough of the older linen-like hankies for the background of each block. I folded the flocked, see-through hankies into butterflies and appliquéd them to the linen ones and finally quilted around the finished butterflies. I tried to match color tones of the flocked hankies with the linen ones.
I wanted you to see what I have been working on this winter in the two hours I quilt or do fancy work each day. I would like to work longer, but I am a farmer’s wife, church treasurer, and grandma to two wonderful girls. I relax every afternoon, if I am at home, by doing my fancy work. So, I am really slow and it takes a long time for me to get projects done.
I love your magazine and try to watch your show every Saturday afternoon. Keep up the good work!”
Thanks, Mary, for sharing your gifts and ideas with us.
