St. Andrew's House on the Hood Canal, 7550 E. Hwy 106, Union Wash. (INFO)
Description: Joe Cunningham, quilter, author, lecturer and teacher, has announced his first quilt retreat in twenty years. Teaming up with Seattle-based Patricia Belyea, quilter, teacher and importer of Japanese yukata cottons, Cunningham has created a retreat to inspire and refresh quilters of all levels.
The retreat location is beautiful St Andrew's House, on the picturesque Hood Canal near Seattle. Between arrival on Sunday, November 10 and departure on Friday, November 15, 2013, quilters will be treated to creative classes, evening entertainment, great food and good fellowship.
The emphasis of the instruction will be techniques that open creative possibilities for retreat participants. Joe's studies in traditional quilts have led him to develop step-by-step approaches to simple yet creative quilt design. Quilters will learn new ways to make blocks, as well as surprising and easy techniques to use in future quilts. Rather than working with pencil and paper, quilters will learn directly through cutting and sewing. All lessons will be illustrated with actual quilts.
The sewing room will be open all day and night. For those who want to take a break, the retreat location promises beach walks, rainforest hikes or just relaxing on the wrap-around porch with views of the Olympic Mountains.
Patricia will present some of her enormous collection of yukata cottons and talk about these remarkable hand-dyed Japanese textiles one evening. Joe will share his lively one-man musical, "Joe The Quilter" another night.
A large quilting frame will be set up in the Great Hall for Joe to teach hand stitching in free time between activities. He reminisced "When I was the artist in residence at the deYoung Museum here in San Francisco, I was supposed to design displays to foster interaction with the public. I had four or five exhibits with digital cameras and fancy projections, but it turned out that what everyone most wanted to do was to sit around the quilting frame and stitch away!"
A portion of the proceeds from the retreat will benefit the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum.
