Kutztown Folk Festival 2012

The 63rd Annual Kutztown Folk Festival is 9 days long, June 30 - July 8, 2012. It is held in Kutztown, Pennsylvania; easily accessible from all major routes in Eastern Pennsylvania.

The Kutztown Folk Festival is the oldest folklife festival in the United States, focusing on the Pennsylvania Dutch culture and traditions. Educational, fun, and a hands-on experience, the Kutztown Folk Festival has been named as one of the three "must see" festivals on the east coast by the Washington Post, one of the top three festivals in the nation by USA Today, and has had feature articles in such publications as Saveur Magazine and National Geographic.

America's largest quilt sale, demonstrating craftsmen, traditional Pa Dutch cooking, and unusual historical demonstrations and reenactments are only a small part of what makes this Festival unique. 40% of the Festival visitors are under the age of 12. Helping to create a lasting memory of a happy family day together in the mind of a child is one of our most important goals.

New for 2012: This year is the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War, and the Festival is featuring "Pennsylvanians and the Civil War". Included will be Pennsylvania's Civil War Road Show, Experts on interesting Civil War topics, including the Pennsylvania Dutch involvement, medical practices during the War, Cavalry tactics, Quilts: Directional Signs for the Underground Railroad, and the life of an infantryman. There will be a reenactment encampment, Cavalry horses, and a private collection of Civil War artifacts never before made public.

If you are interested in more information, please email me at dave@kutztownfestival.com. We have a significant database of interesting articles, press releases, background info, interviews, and electronic photos, and a short 5 minute movie that are available to you.

You can visit our website at www.kutztownfestival.com.

Material Men: Innovation & the Art of Quiltmaking
October 11 - December 30, 2012

October 11 - December 30, 2012

Material Men:  Innovation & the Art of Quiltmaking

Despite the contributions of men to the world of quilting over the past two centuries, quilting is still perceived culturally as "women's work." But that perception is slowly changing with the increased visibility of quilts made by men. Some male quilters have achieved celebrity status in the quilting world, teaching, publishing books and magazines, creating television programs, some even designing their own fabric lines. The larger question is not about whether men quilt but what men have brought to the art of quilting, which is the raison d'être of the upcoming exhibit Material Men:  Innovation & the Art of Quiltmaking at the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum in La Conner, Washington. This exhibit will showcase the many innovations in design, technique, and materials which a formidable group of fifteen male quilters have brought to the art of quiltmaking.

Lecture: As part of the exhibit's official Opening festivities, Dutch master fiber artist Leslie Gabriëlse will present a lecture at 2:00PM on October 13, 2012.

Artists' Reception:  The Artists' Opening Reception will follow at 5:00PM.
