Quilts of Valor Awarded Memorial Day Weekend

Winterset, Iowa, home of Fons & Porter, the bridges of Madison County, and the birthplace of John Wayne, was a busy place during Memorial Day weekend. The main event was the ribbon cutting for the brand new John Wayne Birthplace Museum, but my favorite event was a concert played by the Iowa Military Veterans Band.

This group of men and women, all veterans and all from Iowa, is the only group of its kind in the country. They were in Winterset last Saturday to play prior to the ribbon cutting at the museum.

Near the end of the band concert, the announcer turned the program over to the Covered Bridge Quilters, our local quilt guild, for the presentation of a Quit of Valor. My friend Judy Trask made a few brief remarks about how important the Quilts of Valor program is to our group, and then Jane Reed and I showed a quilt that we had made for the band director, James Goodwin.

After an enthusiastic response from the crowd and band members, Judy announced that we also had a Quilt of Valor for every member of the band present that day. They were all quite surprised—and VERY appreciative. Thirty-five quilts were given away that day.

Our quilt guild has spent the past nine months making quilts to be presented at this event. About 400 yards of fabric were donated to our group by Springs Creative fabric company.

The balance of the fabric was donated by guild members. Many of the quilts were quilted by guild member Riina Thompson, others were sent to Quilts of Valor volunteer longarm quilters, and some were quilted by the members who made them.

It was such a great day for all involved. If you haven’t made a Quilt of Valor, I hope you’ll think about doing that. I’ve made several, and plan to make more. If you need some inspiration, here are a few Fons & Porter patterns and quilt kits to get you started.

  1. As a recipient of a quilt, I am deeply appreciative and honored by the presentation. Thank you to “my” quilters, Luella Fairholm and Riina Thompson.

  2. I was so surprised and thankful to receive the beautiful quilt you ladies made and presented to me at the concert. It was such a lovely surprise. I have shown it to several people and they all think it is simply beautiful. Your act of kindness was greatly appreciated by me and all the members of the band. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
