I created “Shining Star” from Love of Quilting May/June 2015 as a Quilts of Valor project. Quilts of Valor is a charity that provides quilts to honor Americans who have served in the armed forces. Red, white and blue symbolize the colors of the American flag. These colors paired with Star quilt blocks make a perfect patriotic quilt.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy project, look no further than “Friends and Heroes” from Quilting Quickly January/February 2016. Joy McKeon used a variety of blue and red prints to make this scrappy lap quilt. It’s always fun to decorate your 4th of July table with a festive table topper. Deb Finan used cute reproduction Americana prints to make “Americana” from Quilting Quickly May/June 2016. There’s even a free quilting video tutorial, Quilting Quickly: Americana, to guide you through the basics of making this project.
Short on time and space? Make a patriotic Pillow! This quick and easy weekend project by the Fons & Porter Staff is from Easy Quilts Summer 2015. A festive pillow will add pizzazz to your holiday décor.
What do patriotic quilts mean to me? These quilts, like the American flag, are a symbol of our freedom and all the values we hold sacred. Many of us use patriotic quilts to decorate our homes to celebrate a holiday, but they can also be used to commemorate the sacrifices of the troops. If someone in your life is a veteran, a patriotic quilt can be a touching tribute to their contributions and a way to thank them every day.
