Knitting for a Cause

Fons & Porter partnered with The Madison County Health Care System, Heartland Fiber Company, Ben Franklin and the Madison County Dessert Factory to host a “knitting night” to bring awareness to the “Period of PURPLE Crying” to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. The task was to knit purple caps for the newborns at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. We are happy to report over 60 caps were knitted and donated.

Research has shown that frustration with a crying infant is the number one trigger for the shaking and abuse of infants. The “Period of Purple Crying” is the phrase used to describe the point in a baby’s life when they cry more than any other time. PURPLE is an acronym to explain: crying hits a peak around two months of age; it can be unexpected; resistant to soothing; appears painful; lasts a long time (up to several hours); and it often happens in the evening.
