Are you familiar with sister quilt blocks? They’re a visually stimulating way of using the same block twice in your quilt pattern.
Sister quilt blocks are a fun way to see how the same quilt block can change the look of a quilt by using different colorways or by turning the second block at a different angle. What’s more, they can be placed next to one another or in different areas of the quilt top. All of these characteristics that are found in sister block quilts make for impactful quilts that demand attention.
You’ll notice the Bonfire Sampler quilt uses pairs of blocks, but you almost miss them because they’re not identical! The varying colorways and distance between each sister block requires that the admirer of this quilt take a closer, longer look. Pretty exciting stuff, isn’t it?
An expert in sister blocks, quilt designer and author AnneMarie Chany, is well-versed in the sister sampler quilt and has tons of great ideas…
We invited her to talk about her quilt, Kin Coterie, on the Love of Quilting TV show, episode 2802. And, what a hit! AnneMarie’s quilts tend to be incredibly colorful and energetic, making them a popular project, perfect for all ages.
AnneMarie has authored a book called Sister Sampler Quilts: 3 Modern Sampler Quilts with Paired Sister Blocks and it offers gorgeous quilt patterns for creating lovely quilts using sister blocks. You can see AnneMarie’s signature color palette here, but you can incorporate whatever fabrics suit your taste. As we all know, quilting is a personal process in many ways, and injecting your own creativity into your quilts is half the fun!
