I completely relate to that–I often look back at a picture of my two year old nephew hugging his new quilt with delight. (His dad is the son of a quilter and knew to take a photo of the precious moment.)

A favorite gift was the happiness her mother showed when looking at her new quilt.
It worked a similar way for me-I get teary eyed with good memories when I wrap up in the quilt with the flowers of all 50 states that my sister was working on. I finished it with her input for the 6 weeks she was in hospice. She was totally paralyzed, but I planned the embroidery with her and finished quilting it about 2months after she died. It is my family’s favorite quilt. I feel wrapped in her love whenever I use it.
She gave her mother a nap-size “Corn and Beans” scrap quilt in blues, red, browns and greens. Quoting Marianne: “Seeing my mom’s happiness as she hugged her quilt was my own favorite gift that year” I know exactly what she means. That is one of the joys of quilting.

I love to make quilted items for my family for Christmas and 2 years ago I made a wall quilt for both my mom and dad and my inlaws. Each quilt had a square for each family member (on that side of the family) and each family member had personalized their own square, and then I put them all together and finished them up. The look of joy on both my mom and my mom in laws faces was priceless! My mom cherishes her own quilt even more now since my stepdad passed away last September. I love making my family happy with my handmade gifts.
