There is so much that happens behind the scenes to make the Fons & Porter magazine and TV series happen, so we thought we’d give you an inside look! We sat down with Colleen Tauke to talk about her role as the sewing specialist at our Winterset, Iowa, office.
Q: How long have you been quilting?
A: A long time! I dabbled here and there for a while, but I really got serious about quilting 13 years ago. I watched a lot of Love of Quilting on TV before I started quilting, partly because IPTV was one of the only cable channels we got in southern Iowa at the time!
Q: What does being a sewing specialist for Fons & Porter entail?
A: I prepare the step-by-step pieces for TV so that the hosts don’t have to spend half the episode cutting and piecing entire blocks. For the magazines, I show the steps for Sew Easy lessons and I provide the Tried & True Tested for You blocks. When I have time, I answer readers’ questions about patterns.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I’m working on blocks for TV that deal with half and quarter square triangle units. I’m also working on a baby quilt.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: Getting to sew all the time! I love playing with color combinations for the Tried & True blocks and working with all kinds of fabrics from different fabric companies.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
A: I love that I can be part of our readers’ and watchers’ quilting process. Quilters are such fun, generous people, and I like that I can help and inspire them.
Look for Colleen’s excellent work in upcoming issues and episodes of Love of Quilting!
