From Marianne and Liz - July/August 2006

Don’t you just love summer? It’s a great time to get outside, visit family and friends, and take in some quilting events.
We view quilting in the summer differently than during the rest of the year. Quick, small projects that can be completed in a day or so with children or grandchildren are perfect for summer days. Youngsters will be anxious to create their own Kuku Bird (page 42). They’ll have fun stitching and beading their project while gaining insight into
a different culture. Sew Easy: Using Paintstiks® on Fabric (page 26) will appeal to all ages. Gather your stencils and create your own fabric with a variety of textures and designs.
While kids are busy with summer projects, you can delve into a new stitching trend. Punch needle embroidery (page 104) is quick and portable—perfect to do while sitting at a ball game or by the pool.
If you’re out traveling this summer, stop by and visit our retail store located at 54 Court in beautiful Winterset, Iowa, county seat of Madison County. If you’re not able to make it in person, let us visit you via public television. Series 800 was made available to all public television stations on June 3. To find out when “Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting” is showing in your area, go to pbs.org/stationfinder and type in your zip code.
We hope you are enjoying our special bits of nostalgia and the work of all our guest designers during our 25th anniversary year!

Happy Quilting,
