Design Wall

Shyrlee Mealing

In our house we have by-pass doors on the closets (bedroom/sewing room). These have a metal track, which is covered by a metal trim. I attached sticky backed loop and hook tape to the underside of this trim and the softer fuzzy side to a large piece of flannel (had to staple it on as the sticky stuff clogged up my machine and just didn't work). This gives me a large area to use as a design wall and when I'm not using it I can separate the tape and fold up the flannel until the next time.

My husband created a square with legs out of PVC pipe. I then covered it with two 72" squares of felt. This gives me 2 sides to work on and it also makes a great room divider.

i use the fleeced back side of a plastic picnic table cloth. This is also good when you go to a retreat or sew all day as you can pin your fabric to the table cloth, fold it and take home your project ready to be completed.

I covered my mother in law's wall roughly 8'by 10' with styrofoam, now all she has to do is pin the fabric up to the boards. I attached the styrofoam with peel and stick hook and loop strips.

I use T pins to attach a dark flannel piece to the top of closet doors. No one will ever see the holes made by the pins.

i covered a 3' by 4' piece of cardboard with flannel and hung it wiht large pushpins behind my bedroom door. it's not as big as i need or would like but it's better then nothing.
Alternate Design Wall
Another idea. Use pieces of Celotex Insolation board. Cut the size you want, use duct tape top bottom and in between to attach together. Cover with Flannel Sheets. Can be folded together for storage. Works Great!

my husband had 2 pieces of leftover 1/4 inch plywood from a project which were 6' by 3'. i attached them to each other with hinges, stapled a flannel backed tablecloth to them and tada....perfect design wall. the best part is it folds up and stores in a small space beside one of my shelving units
