Seam ripper or a small knitting needle
I use a small short knitting needle or my large seam ripper to hold my fabric in place when sewing. That works just fine.
Metal nail file - Awl
I use a metal nail file instead of an awl. It's perfect for holding items in place and doesn't roll away like my awl did.
