Appliqué Patterns & Projects

Appliqué quilt patterns are the perfect way for quilters of any level to add a little something extra to their projects. While some might think of this technique as something more traditional, other quilters might find the look modern when paired with the right quilt fabrics. Asa result, appliqué patterns and projects appeal to a wide variety of quilters, novice and seasoned. Whether you prefer the look of needle-turn or raw-edge, or simply enjoy using fusible web, each of these projects shows you a different take on a well-known and widely used technique.

No matter what technique you choose, the process is the same: one fabric is set on top of the other and then the two layers are combined. While hand-sewn is the most traditional application, you can also use a sewing machine or fusible web to join the two layers of fabric together. When applying shapes and curves that are challenging to piece, this technique is particularly useful. Imagine piecing flower stems down the border of a quilt. It’s not easy! With this technique, it looks great, accuracy increases, and the process takes less time. If you’re just starting out, begin with a project that uses just a few shapes or curves to get the feel for it. If you’ve already got the hang of it, go big with an all-over appliqué design. We know you’ll love many of the appliqué quilt patterns you find here, including some of our free quilt patterns that we love so much!
